Is India becoming an Important Market for Apple iPhone ?

After the launch of the iPhone 5 Apple has shown a lot of love for India. The launch of the iTunes Store, Apple TV is just one part of the love. The iPhone 5 also came to India pretty soon compared to previous models and so did the iPad Mini.

NOW,

Apple is running extremely high dosage promotional activities for the iPhone in India. Apple is offering 0% EMI schemes, with 10% cash back offers on the iPhone 4, 4S and the iPhone 5.

The latest offer by Apple lets the public give their old smartphone and get a minimum discount of Rs.7000 on the iPhone 4. This means the iPhone 4 which retails for Rs.26,500 would be available for 19,500.

This is primarily done by Apple to make the iPhone available in the sub-20,000 range to take on the Samsung Galaxy Grand, Blackberry Torch and some HTC phones.

No surprises, this scheme is doing extremely well and the latest reports state that the iPhone 4 is outselling the iPhone 5 in India. It’s only Apple who can sell a 2 year old phone at Rs.20,000.

In fact the iPhone 4 scheme was available only till 14th April,2013 but seeing an extremely positive response this scheme has been extended until 30th April,2013.

EMI Brochure

There are still some questions unanswered –

1. Why is Apple focusing on India all of a sudden?

Samsung is taking a part of Apple’s pie in the US, UK and Canada. Also Samsung has a greater hold on the smartphone market in developing countries like India. Apple has understood that if it wants to continue leading the smartphone market developing countries like India and China are extremely important.

2. Behind the scenes of the iPhone 4, minimum Rs.7000 discount scheme

The Apple reseller gets a Rs.5000 credit note from the distributer in country( Redington and Ingram Micro) and the rest Rs.2000 can be recovered by the reseller by selling the smartphone that the customers gives. It is on the discretion of the reseller whether or not to accept the smartphone given by the customer.

3. Why the special Scheme only for iPhone 4 ?

I think everyone by knows that the iPhone 5S is going to launch in summer. After the launch of the iPhone 5S the iPhone 4 will become almost obsolete. At the moment also sales of iPhone 4 in developed countries is extremely low. Apple wants to sell as many as possible before the launch on the iPhone 5S. iPhone is a premium phone and in a poor country like India people would not buying even a 2 year old iPhone if it is in their budget. Apple has studied the Indian market well.

Introducing Google Currents

The world’s most valuable brand has just released another product in the wild to expand its operations and capture another avenue en route to claiming glory in the modern-day virtual war. Google Currents, a social reading platform launched for iOS and Android is an app “that lets you explore online magazines and other content with the swipe of a finger. It brings together this content in a beautiful and simple way so you can easily navigate between words, pictures and video on your smartphone or tablet.

Currents comes as a direct competition to the likes of Flipboard and Pulse who have been leading the line with regards to this avenue. And from the initial glimpses, Currents looks set to give them a run for their money. If i may predict, it won’t be long before Google Currents becomes number one in its field.

You can download Google Currents on your Android device from the Android Market and on your Apple device from the Apple App Store.

Cluzee for Android scares Siri, lets you ‘multi-task like a pro’ (video)

Apple doesn’t always innovate. Sometimes it just picks up an idea that is already available in the market, adds its own classy style to it and leaves it to its fanbois to make it the biggest thing the world has seen. Siri is one such example.

Siri isn’t the first automated voice control system we have seen. And to be honest, no one really cared to have one until Apple came out with Siri. Since its launch with the iPhone 4S, the so-called intelligent virtual personal assistant became a must-have feature for every smartphone-owning geek, propelling many a developer to hack it to do extraordinary things, and some to develop a similar thing for other platforms. Over the last 2 months, we had seen several Siri-like apps emerge on Android itself, but none even close to matching Apple’s sophistication on Siri. Today, though, Siri should be scared.

Tronton LLC has matched Siri for iOS with Cluzee for Android – an intelligent personal assistant that lets you, according to its introductory video, multi-task like a pro!

Cluzee is the closest competitor to Siri which matches it neck-and-neck and probably even outdoes it given the variety of commands it understands as compared to Siri. Apart from giving you personalized recommendations, daily briefs (based on entries in Calendar), weather information, navigation, standard web search, and local search — all of which Siri can do — it also gives you local news/traffic/deals, allows you to update your Facebook/Twitter account, plan vacations, plan how much you’re eating and compare it with time spent exercising, manage notes, etc. In short, it is a complete package which can leave many Android users joyous and iOS users envious.

Talk to your phone! I can help you save your time and money. Ask me to do things just by talking to your phone. Do Siri features in iPhone 4S excite you but you don’t own an iPhone? I bring conversational interface, intelligence and many more capabilities on Android.

You can download Cluzee directly from the Android Market on your phone, or from this link.

iPad 2 in India – Day One: SOLD OUT!

The 2nd generation of Apple’s magical and revolutionary device, the iPad 2, has only just been available for sale a few hours ago here in India and it is already sold out. The news came from Apple India on Facebook when they said they are already out of stalk (read: stock)!

(click on images for larger view)

As you can see in the screenshot attached above, Apple India made a big blunder with spelling of stalk/stock. Seriously, is this really Apple Inc. we are talking about? The mistake was later justified by Apple India, blaming a ‘junior employ’ of the store. Still, looks bad!

I really feel Apple shouldn’t ignore the Indian market and should release their products in India in sync with the U.S. launch so they can enjoy the benefits of large sales in the world’s largest telecom market!

Samsung to Launch Bada OS 2.0 in July starting with India

Its been around 10 months when Samsung first launched the Bada OS and now according to the news we are getting the next version of Bada OS – The Bada OS 2.0 – and it will launch in July, starting first with India.

Whats new in the Samsung Bada OS 2.0??

1. Near Field Communication support(NFC)

2.Better 3rd party social integration

3.SDK to be available for mac and Linux for better convenience of developers.

Why is the Bada OS 2.0 launching in India First?

Samsung has a R&D center at Bangalore (India) and a staff of around 2000 present at Bangalore develop around 30% of the apps that run on Bada OS.

We are all aware that Bada OS has very few 3rd party developers and obviously to compete against the rich android and ios market Samsung is working hard on its R&D.

Its a new OS and developed in India so they want to launch it in India. Also Samsung expect that their Bada OS market will succeed just like their Android Market in India.

P.S. Samsung is the top Android manufacturer in India.

BREAKING: Nokia, Microsoft join hands to ‘Build a New Global Mobile Ecosystem’

Well we have news coming in that Nokia and Microsoft have joined hands to come together to form a “broad strategic partnership that would use their complementary strengths and expertise to create a new global mobile ecosystem.”

Nokia and Microsoft intend to jointly create market-leading mobile products and services designed to offer consumers, operators and developers unrivalled choice and opportunity. As each company would focus on its core competencies, the partnership would create the opportunity for rapid time to market execution. Additionally, Nokia and Microsoft plan to work together to integrate key assets and create completely new service offerings, while extending established products and services to new markets.

Aim of this partnership

Nokia would adopt Windows Phone as its principal smartphone strategy, innovating on top of the platform in areas such as imaging, where Nokia is a market leader.
Nokia would help drive the future of Windows Phone. Nokia would contribute its expertise on hardware design, language support, and help bring Windows Phone to a larger range of price points, market segments and geographies.
Nokia and Microsoft would closely collaborate on joint marketing initiatives and a shared development roadmap to align on the future evolution of mobile products.
Bing would power Nokia’s search services across Nokia devices and services, giving customers access to Bing’s next generation search capabilities. Microsoft adCenter would provide search advertising services on Nokia’s line of devices and services.
Nokia Maps would be a core part of Microsoft’s mapping services. For example, Maps would be integrated with Microsoft’s Bing search engine and adCenter advertising platform to form a unique local search and advertising experience
Nokia’s extensive operator billing agreements would make it easier for consumers to purchase Nokia Windows Phone services in countries where credit-card use is low.
Microsoft development tools would be used to create applications to run on Nokia Windows Phones, allowing developers to easily leverage the ecosystem’s global reach.
Nokia’s content and application store would be integrated with Microsoft Marketplace for a more compelling consumer experience.

This coming together of Nokia and Microsoft will mark a new beginning for both these companies who have struggled to keep pace with the growing popularity of Apple and Google in the smartphone market. While Apple have a stronghold on the market thanks to the iPhone, running on Apple’s iOS, Google is quickly capturing majority of the market with their Android OS running smartphones, making it a two-horse race between Apple and Google. But now, things might change:

“Today, developers, operators and consumers want compelling mobile products, which include not only the device, but the software, services, applications and customer support that make a great experience,” Stephen Elop, Nokia President and CEO, said at a joint news conference in London. “Nokia and Microsoft will combine our strengths to deliver an ecosystem with unrivalled global reach and scale. It’s now a three-horse race.”

“I am excited about this partnership with Nokia,” said Steven A. Ballmer, Microsoft CEO. “Ecosystems thrive when fueled by speed, innovation and scale. The partnership announced today provides incredible scale, vast expertise in hardware and software innovation and a proven ability to execute.”

HP Web OS tablets to launch throughout the year starting march

HP is all set to launch the HP tablet/slate very soon. In fact the first of its tablets(Topaz) will launch in March while the other one (Opal) would launch sometime in September. Web OS phones have been quite good though android has taken over Web OS in the phone department but in the tablet department with HoneyComb and Web OS tablet both in the market at almost the same time would make it interesting to see who wins the battle.

Apart from android’s Honeycomb there are a few others too in the tablet market. The competition will be intense.

Sepp Blatter backs India to host FIFA World Cup 2026

After awarding Russia and Qatar a chance to host the FIFA World Cups in 2018 and 2022 respectively, FIFA President Sepp Blatter has recognized India as one of the potential hosts of the world cup in 2026.

India has a population of more than 1.1 billion- making it a massive market for any game.

When it comes to viewership, football has seen a rapid rise in popularity since the arrival of cable television in the country. The Barclays Premier League in particular has huge number of supporters in India.

However, the development of the game itself has not kept pace with the rise in the quantity of fans. Despite the mind-boggling population, the country has struggled to put together a national team of note and is currently ranked 142nd in the world – below the likes of Burundi, Sierra Leone and Congo.

All that could change if it were given the chance to host the world cup in 2026, according to Blatter.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the Swiss said: “If we have to identify new territories where football can be a better part of life then definitely it is the subcontinent, India, where they have 1.2 billion people.

“This is really a double market, not just a market for football but for the economy too. India is a real power.”

While Blatter’s sentiments may be laudable, the recently concluded Commonwealth Games brought to light the infrastructural and administrative problems the country needs to overcome before it can do justice to a global event.

Football fans in India will be hoping this can happen by the time the bidding for the 2026 edition of the tournament gets underway.

The next edition of the FIFA World Cup will be held in Brazil in 2014.

The rise of Windows 7

Monday marked a new high for Windows 7 as Microsoft’s newest OS  has now officially gobbled up over 20% of the market share, reports reveal. This means that 1 in every 5 computers around the world is running on Microsoft’s Windows 7.

But despite the rise, Windows 7 (20.87%) is still way behind its older sibling Windows XP which accounts for around 56.72% of the market share. Windows Vista is stuttering at 12.11%.

Apple’s OS X (versions 10.5 and 10.6) have together grabbed around 4.5% of the market and the number is growing steadily.

Apple heads US Smartphone market share; Not long before Android topples Apple

We have a pretty satisfying stat for the Apple faithful here: Apple Inc. is currently the top smartphone seller in the US of A, according to Neilsen Data, claiming a market share of 28.6% – narrowly ahead of RIM’s declining grip (26.1%) and Google’s rapidly increasing Android force (25.8%).

So this makes it clear that Apple iOS is the dominant smartphone OS in the US, with Google’s Android OS seeing a lightening fast growth, and it will not be long ago before it heads past the iOS bandwagon.

RIM, however, is in a pretty sad condition, seeing its Blackberry OS on the downside.

Android’s increasing market share is visibly seen in the diagram below. Not only that, we have an intriguing stat: Android is the leading OS among smartphone buyers in the last 6 months with a share of 40%!

“But despite its surge among recent acquirers, when it comes to overall consumer market share, Android OS (25.8%) is still behind Apple iOS (28.6%). RIM Blackberry’s position is less clear: Its share (26.1%) puts it within the margin of error of both Apple iOS and Android. In other words, RIM remains statistically tied with both Apple for first and Android for third. Apple’s clear lead over Android notwithstanding, this race might still be too close to call,” the analysts explain.

We very strongly feel that in won’t be long ago before Google surpasses Apple in the ongoing smartphone OS popularity chart.
