12 Best Jailbreak Tweaks for your iPhone

Since its release in 2007, the iPhone has created a whole new ecosystem of its own which has, as some like to call it “changed the game” in the field of smartphones. Each generation of iOS has produced more stable devices adding many rich features and needed enhancements.

That being said, many still believe that iOS hasn’t made as much progress as it should have by now. Apple made some major changes in iOS 5, added many wanted features but many still feel that it’s not enough. In my personal opinion and the opinion of others, the iPhone and iOS can perfectly stand on its own feet, although there are some things that could be better.

That’s where jailbreaking comes in, a lot of people jailbreak so that they can pirate apps and games and steal people’s hard work but unfortunately for them, this is no longer possible on a large scale as Installous, the primary source of piracy on iOS was shut down a few months ago, leaving that aside-some people jailbreak simply to improve their iPhone experience. I’m one of them.

Considering that I have been jailreaking for many years now, I think I can say I know most of the stuff that’s out there. Keeping that in mind I’ve made a list of jailbreak tweaks that can improve your day-to-day iPhone experience. I know that in time some of these tweaks may cease to exist or may be replaced by ones that are better but for now these 12 jailbreak tweaks do a pretty good job at improving the iPhone experience. These are some of the best jailbreak tweaks for iOS 6.

AdBlocker

If you are one of those guys who don’t like to spend much on Apps and Games and therefore download mostly free apps then you might’ve noticed that some of them contain ads. Although they usually just stay at the bottom of the app, they do a pretty good job at distracting you. With AdBlocker you can block ad networks like iAds, AdMob and many more. It also blocks most ads in Safari. Browsing and playing games without ads makes the user experience a whole lot better and that’s just what AdBlocker does.

Auxo

The stock iOS app switcher is pretty good but it doesn’t give you the slightest idea of what’s currently going on in an app, while Auxo provides you with a snapshot of the current state of apps in your app switcher and along with that there are swipe gestures for removing apps from the switcher, there are also redesigned music controls and quick access to toggles for popular items like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Auxo lets you control the contents of the app switcher using only swipe gestures and it certainly makes the iPhone feel more complete.

f.lux

Have you ever seen someone using a mobile phone in a dark environment and noticed the bright blue glow coming from the screen? Most of us surely have, f.lux fixes this. It simply warms up your screen to match your lighting at night. Sleep researchers say that even a little extra blue light at night can keep you awake and negatively affect the quality of your sleep; f.lux prevents this and makes it easier to wind down and go to sleep at night. It also reduces eyestrain.

FullForce for Phone

This is Ryan Petrich’s latest tweak which is just for iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5th generation users. It extends apps and games that have not been updated for these devices to fit the whole screen, this way no space is left empty on the display and the apps can take complete advantage of the new 4’ devices. It has a variety of modes but the author recommends the Expanded mode for apps and Stretched mode for games. You can also keep them cropped and shift them either to the top or the bottom of your display.

iFile

To the ones who have been jailbreaking for some time now, iFile needs no introduction, it is a must have tweak for jailbroken devices. It’s like the Finder in OS X, it allows you to zip and unzip files, access all of the files residing on your iPhone, share files via Bluetooth or via Wi-Fi, copy and paste files, create folders, view file properties, and much more. It is the best file manager for iOS, hands down.

PasswordPilot

It basically stores your App Store password in an encrypted manner so that you don’t have to enter your password again and again while making purchases on the App Store. It’s not recommended for people who have their kids play around with their iPhones but for everyone else, it’s a timesaver.

ProTube Extension for YouTube

After so many years, Google has now released a proper YouTube app for us iOS users, the app fares well in overall usage but lacks some features. ProTube Extension for YouTube is a tweak by Jonas Gessner that adds a whole lot of features to the app, you can select the playback quality, download the videos, manage saved videos and even download just the audio file of a video in M4A format. Most importantly, all ads are blocked and you also get AirPlay support for downloaded vidoes.

SafariSwipez

Don’t you just hate it when you have to extend your finger all the way up to the ‘x’ on the top left of a tab when you want to close it in Safari while using your iPhone singlehandedly? Well those days are gone now; SafariSwipez is a newly released jailbreak tweak that allows you to close tabs using swipe gestures. To close a tab, just swipe the tab up or down and you’re done.

SMS Timestamps

You might have noticed that your iPhone shows timestamps for only specific messages in your inbox and the same goes for iMessage, because that’s how Apple decided to make it but don’t worry, there’s a fix for this. SMS Timestamps is a tweak that allows you to timestamp every message and also has the option to set time constraints so as to how often you want timestamps to show on your messages.

SwipeSelection

Sometimes it can be very annoying and difficult to get the text cursor in the exact position that you’d like it to be, guys if there’s just one tweak you’d install from this list, then run over to Cydia and install SwipeSelection. It drastically improves the ability to edit text entries while using the iPhone’s keyboard and makes text editing and highlighting perfect on the iPhone.

Zephyr

Zephyr has become one of the primary reasons for people to jailbreak their iPhones to begin with. It allows you to control your iPhone using swipe gestures; you can bring up the app switcher and switch between apps using simple multi-touch gestures. It might not sound impressive at first but once you start to use it, you’ll come to appreciate that controlling your iPhone with Zephyr feels so much more comfortable than using the physical home button.

Skype for iPad pumped with Retina goodness

Following Apple’s pixel-rich approach with the new iPad, many iOS app developers had to mend their ways and develop apps and games that make the most of the retina display of the new iPad. Today, another such app has upgraded itself to match Apple’s “resolutionary” approach, with Skype for iPad getting a retina update, meaning its icons and menus will not show pixelated fonts that will harm your new iPad Retina sensibilities. The only hitch is that the new iPad’s front-facing camera is still VGA, though it’s still nice to see Skype keeping pace with the latest inventions.

You can download Skype for iPad with Retina goodness here.

Apple announce name of person who downloaded 25 billionth app: Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China

Over two days ago Apple officially announced that its near-four year old App Store had reached a mammoth 25 billion downloads. Prior to that Apple had announced the person to download the 25 billionth app would receive a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card and since the time the milestone app was downloaded we were waiting for Apple to reveal to lucky name who won the prize. Today, they have announced that the winner of the gift card is Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China. Fu downloaded Disney’s water-based physics-puzzler “Where’s My Water? Free” to win himself the $10,000-worth prize. Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddie Cue said the following:

We’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve this historic milestone of 25 billion apps downloaded. When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users.

Apple’s New Game-Changer: Messages For Mac

Back in the 90s and early 200x, having the ability to send a text message across to another person far away from you via an electronic device (a la SMS) was a costly affair. Back then we didn’t have technologies and innovations as we have now so we were left at the mercy of our network carriers to charge us inexplicable amounts for sending and receiving SMSes. Today, it’s a different ball game altogether.

Ideas like the BlackBerry Messenger, more popularly referred to as BBM, from RIM have found a way to bypass the carrier and instead use the data networks of operators to send instant messages, making it cheap and convenient for users all around. And while we thought things couldn’t get better than this, they just did.

As you know, Apple’s answer to RIM’s BBM is iMessage — an instant messaging service available on all iOS devices, making it a true SMS replacement so long as all your friends have iOS devices which, let’s be honest, they probably do. Now, after a great response, Apple is bringing iMessage to Mac OS. Yes!

With the release of the Mountain Lion OS this summer, Apple will be making iMessage a part of the in-built desktop experience, offering something that not even the incumbent SMS can offer and something that’s not yet possible, unless you resort to a third-party chat protocol-using app.

Ubiquitous instant messaging

With Messages for Mac you can start a conversation on your iPhone and continue it on your Mac whenever you return home. Getting cozy on the bed with your iPad? No problem, your iMessages go with you everywhere. Throw in Skype for calls and FaceTime for video chats and we don’t need these useless carriers at all. Think different.
