12 Best Jailbreak Tweaks for your iPhone

Since its release in 2007, the iPhone has created a whole new ecosystem of its own which has, as some like to call it “changed the game” in the field of smartphones. Each generation of iOS has produced more stable devices adding many rich features and needed enhancements.

That being said, many still believe that iOS hasn’t made as much progress as it should have by now. Apple made some major changes in iOS 5, added many wanted features but many still feel that it’s not enough. In my personal opinion and the opinion of others, the iPhone and iOS can perfectly stand on its own feet, although there are some things that could be better.

That’s where jailbreaking comes in, a lot of people jailbreak so that they can pirate apps and games and steal people’s hard work but unfortunately for them, this is no longer possible on a large scale as Installous, the primary source of piracy on iOS was shut down a few months ago, leaving that aside-some people jailbreak simply to improve their iPhone experience. I’m one of them.

Considering that I have been jailreaking for many years now, I think I can say I know most of the stuff that’s out there. Keeping that in mind I’ve made a list of jailbreak tweaks that can improve your day-to-day iPhone experience. I know that in time some of these tweaks may cease to exist or may be replaced by ones that are better but for now these 12 jailbreak tweaks do a pretty good job at improving the iPhone experience. These are some of the best jailbreak tweaks for iOS 6.

AdBlocker

If you are one of those guys who don’t like to spend much on Apps and Games and therefore download mostly free apps then you might’ve noticed that some of them contain ads. Although they usually just stay at the bottom of the app, they do a pretty good job at distracting you. With AdBlocker you can block ad networks like iAds, AdMob and many more. It also blocks most ads in Safari. Browsing and playing games without ads makes the user experience a whole lot better and that’s just what AdBlocker does.

Auxo

The stock iOS app switcher is pretty good but it doesn’t give you the slightest idea of what’s currently going on in an app, while Auxo provides you with a snapshot of the current state of apps in your app switcher and along with that there are swipe gestures for removing apps from the switcher, there are also redesigned music controls and quick access to toggles for popular items like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Auxo lets you control the contents of the app switcher using only swipe gestures and it certainly makes the iPhone feel more complete.

f.lux

Have you ever seen someone using a mobile phone in a dark environment and noticed the bright blue glow coming from the screen? Most of us surely have, f.lux fixes this. It simply warms up your screen to match your lighting at night. Sleep researchers say that even a little extra blue light at night can keep you awake and negatively affect the quality of your sleep; f.lux prevents this and makes it easier to wind down and go to sleep at night. It also reduces eyestrain.

FullForce for Phone

This is Ryan Petrich’s latest tweak which is just for iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5th generation users. It extends apps and games that have not been updated for these devices to fit the whole screen, this way no space is left empty on the display and the apps can take complete advantage of the new 4’ devices. It has a variety of modes but the author recommends the Expanded mode for apps and Stretched mode for games. You can also keep them cropped and shift them either to the top or the bottom of your display.

iFile

To the ones who have been jailbreaking for some time now, iFile needs no introduction, it is a must have tweak for jailbroken devices. It’s like the Finder in OS X, it allows you to zip and unzip files, access all of the files residing on your iPhone, share files via Bluetooth or via Wi-Fi, copy and paste files, create folders, view file properties, and much more. It is the best file manager for iOS, hands down.

PasswordPilot

It basically stores your App Store password in an encrypted manner so that you don’t have to enter your password again and again while making purchases on the App Store. It’s not recommended for people who have their kids play around with their iPhones but for everyone else, it’s a timesaver.

ProTube Extension for YouTube

After so many years, Google has now released a proper YouTube app for us iOS users, the app fares well in overall usage but lacks some features. ProTube Extension for YouTube is a tweak by Jonas Gessner that adds a whole lot of features to the app, you can select the playback quality, download the videos, manage saved videos and even download just the audio file of a video in M4A format. Most importantly, all ads are blocked and you also get AirPlay support for downloaded vidoes.

Safari Download Manager

Just like the name says, Safari Download Manager allows you to download files from within the Safari Browser. You can download just about anything and then manage the file from within iFile. Safari Download Manager is a must-have tweak for all those of you who are into downloading stuff on your iPhones.

SafariSwipez

Don’t you just hate it when you have to extend your finger all the way up to the ‘x’ on the top left of a tab when you want to close it in Safari while using your iPhone singlehandedly? Well those days are gone now; SafariSwipez is a newly released jailbreak tweak that allows you to close tabs using swipe gestures. To close a tab, just swipe the tab up or down and you’re done.

SMS Timestamps

You might have noticed that your iPhone shows timestamps for only specific messages in your inbox and the same goes for iMessage, because that’s how Apple decided to make it but don’t worry, there’s a fix for this. SMS Timestamps is a tweak that allows you to timestamp every message and also has the option to set time constraints so as to how often you want timestamps to show on your messages.

SwipeSelection

Sometimes it can be very annoying and difficult to get the text cursor in the exact position that you’d like it to be, guys if there’s just one tweak you’d install from this list, then run over to Cydia and install SwipeSelection. It drastically improves the ability to edit text entries while using the iPhone’s keyboard and makes text editing and highlighting perfect on the iPhone.

Zephyr

Zephyr has become one of the primary reasons for people to jailbreak their iPhones to begin with. It allows you to control your iPhone using swipe gestures; you can bring up the app switcher and switch between apps using simple multi-touch gestures. It might not sound impressive at first but once you start to use it, you’ll come to appreciate that controlling your iPhone with Zephyr feels so much more comfortable than using the physical home button.

Video: Changing the world in 46 seconds

It’s hard to forget Steve Jobs. He’s done so much for technology that you really can’t ignore his contributions. Everyday we remember him in some way or the other, by using his gadgets, writing about him, reading about him, or simply watching his old videos. One such video is the subject matter of this post.

In the video, an unshaven Jobs argues that since the world is built, there’s no reason why it can’t be remade. It’s probably the best 46 seconds of video you’ll watch today.

Knackered!

Some impressive stats:

Angry Birds fans around the world have so far played a total of:

It really is an amazing story how it all started with just a game and is now available as merchandise and books all over the world. Barcelona to open football academy in India soon

The best football club in the world at present, FC Barcelona of Spain is all set to open its first football academy in India to nurture local talent and, hopefully, give the world another Lionel Messi in the next 5 years or so. The Catalans have tied up with Delhi-based Conscient Football and their (Barcelona’s ) football nursery FCBEscoles will be conducting camps at the Heritage School in Gurgaon to train kids in the age-group of 6-14 years.

“We don’t promise to create a Messi here. This is a social project and we want to support India. We have to go step by step.” – FCBscoles director Xevi Marce said.

This is really good news for football lovers in India. Many Barclays Premier League / English Premier League teams are opening academies in India and now the Spanish giants too are entering the land of customs. This shows that India has a lot of talent and it just needs expert guidance to produce world class players who will go on to represent their country and also someday make a mark in European club football.

Staying Ahead of the E-Curve

Today’s Phone, Tomorrow’s History

Did you buy the iPhone 4 a month ago only to find out Apple had plans to release the iPhone 4S a week later? With the constant changing and upgrading of electronics in today’s market, it’s not just difficult to keep up with the most up-to-date products; it’s also hard to know which one is the best for you.

Findthebest is your market insider for staying ahead of the technology curve. The search engine has specs and comparisons with specific information for smartphones, tablets, notebook laptops, or other electronic devices.

Founded by Kevin O’Conner (founder of double click), this Santa Barbara based Start-Up has over 2 million unique visitors a month and was funded by prominent Venture Capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers. Experiencing large consecutive growth, this is a company to keep an eye on for the future of comparison search engines.

If you’re looking for…

Smartphones:

Key items to consider when comparing smartphones include the camera quality, features, screen size, smart rating and talk time (battery-life).  To avoid getting scammed, be sure to buy the phone from a trusted manufacturer instead of online third-party sites. Also, be prepared to pay for pricier phone bills due to the extra messaging and data plans. Findthebest lets you select all of the criterion you are interested in, and compare the phones that possess these features. Check out this example…

Tablets:

Things to look for in a tablet computer include average battery life, features, internal storage, smart rating, weight, and operating system and screen size. Compare up to 10 listings side-by-side to find the best tablet computer. If you’re constantly travelling, than use the weight filter to find a lighter table tablet, so it doesn’t become a burden to tote around. Because tablet computer often come with Wi-Fi capabilities, a 3G capable device is unnecessary.

Notebook laptops:

Laptops vary in battery-life, display size, and storage amount, which could all be important characteristics for you, but also think of the environment in which you’ll use the laptop. Different laptops have different functions and types such as: desktop-replacement, gaming rugged, budget, thin, lightweight and all-purpose laptops, so take these categories into consideration when purchasing your next laptop.

Using FindTheBest’s comparisons for electronics to help compare smartphones, find the best tablets and laptops to complement your lifestyle is quick and easy, saving you time (and maybe money) while making informed purchase decisions.

Carrier wars: iPhone 4S pre-orders begin today

For those of you who were caught up by a gloomy Thursday, here’s a reminder that the new iPhone 4S is available to be booked from today, 3:01am ET onwards. And for the first time, people in the U.S will have up to 3 carriers to choose from to get an iPhone — AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.

  • Sprint offers an unlimited Data Plan (Through October).
  • AT&T’s GSM network will allow faster 14.4 Mbps (theoretical) data speeds and talk and simultaneous data and more international roaming options.
  • Verizon and AT&T have free hotspots on their 4GB and up plans while Sprint’s is $30/month.

If that isn’t enough, this chart from PCMag will surely help you choose the best available option.

Top 10 of Everything in Football: Defenders

This is part two of the series titled ‘Top 10 of everything in football‘. The next part, featuring the top 10 midfielders, will be published tomorrow. Part  one was about the top 10 goalkeepers. To make sure you don’t miss out, it’d would be smart to subscribe to our RSS Feed and Email Newsletter. You can also Follow us on Twitter or Like us on Facebook.

While the strikers score goals and take away all the credit its the defenders who try to stop the strikers from scoring. Defenders are the most important part of the team. They some times make saves which are worthy of a goal. Defenders need to be strong both physically and mentally. They need to be quick to fall back as well. Lets check out our top 10 defenders of Firstain.

10. Philip Lahm
One of the mainstays of the Germany team for several years, Lahm’s marauding runs from full-back are a good avenue of attack for Germany. The versatile Lahm is capable of shooting and passing with either foot, and enjoyed a fine 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

9. Nesta
Nesta has been the backbone of the Italy and AC Milan defenses over the years. He is strong, reliable and has the ability to instill fear in minds of opponents. He is one of the best defender in the world out there.

8. Maicon
Not for a long time has there been a right-back capable of having so much influence on a game. The Inter Milan defender’s forceful runs down the right provide a great avenue of attack, not only for him to cross the ball, but for his teammates who can occupy the space vacated by opposition players trying to arrest Maicon’s attacking stories. He has pace to burn and is a also a solid defender. Keeps the outstanding Barcelona right-back Dani Alves out of the Brazil team.

7. Sergio Ramos
Ramos has everything. He has skill, pace, strength, does not make costly errors, is versatile and scores a lot of goals for a defender. He is a sort of player who can KILL HIMSELF to win the ball.

6. Gerard Pique
Many at Barcelona believe this product of the club’s youth system will go on to captain the club someday. He was a key protagonist as Spain won the World Cup in South Africa last summer. A composed defender who is strong in the air and the tackle, Pique is also adept at launching his team’s attacks. And he even claims to know all of Cristiano Ronaldo’s tricks from their time together at Manchester United.

5. Ashley Cole
Cole is one of the few players over the years to have got to grips with Cristiano Ronaldo. At Euro 2004 he had one of his best games in an England shirt, matching the Portuguese star in a captivating battle. Since then, Cole has developed into arguably the best left-back in the world. He can get forward, score goals, cross the ball, and is Mr Reliable when on the back foot.

4. Carles Puyol
You need a beast to guard a cave. You need Puyol to defend the goal. He is the World’s most AGGRESSIVE defender and a shrewd leader with aggressive looks. Along with Pique, he was instrumental in Spain and Barcelona’s recent run of success.

3. Thiago Silva
The Brazilian has almost everything a good defender should have but is often ignored by everyone. A strong tackler and commanding in the air, the AC Milan center back was outstanding in the 2010-11 season as the Rossoneri won their first Italian title since 2004. Silva is so comfortable on the ball that he was even deployed in midfield by coach Massimiliano Allegri when injuries hit the squad. His performances prompted Milan to extend his contract until June 2016.

2. John Terry
An inspirational player who is never afraid to throw himself on the ball and save his goal. Can score goals as well which is a bonus. Meet John Terry — Mr. Chelsea!

One of the best defender in the world, Terry provides great support to Cech and also motivates everyone around him. With amazing positioning, he provides a great  link between Midfield and Defense and has a hunch for goals. A true leader on the pitch.

1. Nemanja Vidic
The Manchester United defender may not be playing in one of the most prominent national teams, but he helps form a defense that has been particularly stingy over the years. In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, Vidic and his comrades conceded just one goal in 10 matches, a record that helped them top the group ahead of Spain. He has a commanding presence and can also pop up with goals from time to time.

Agree with my top 10? Disagree? Would you like to replace someone in my list with another player? Drop in a comment to share your views. I’ll be glad to hear 🙂

‘iSteve: The Book of Jobs’ — Steve Jobs’ authorized biography coming early 2012

Apple Inc. – the world’s best tech company and manufacturer of game-changing products like the iPod, iPhone and most recently the iPad – owes everything to the genius mind of CEO Steve Jobs. Titled ‘iSteve: The Book of Jobs‘, this Authorized Biography of Steve Jobs, written by Walter Isaacson, will be published by Simon and Shuster early next year.

The Jobs book will be his fourth major biography. In addition to Kissinger: A Biography(1992) he has written Benjamin Franklin: An American Life (2003) and Einstein: His Life and Universe (2007). Warren Buffet: I’d like to be reborn as Sophia Lawrence’s boyfriend

Warren Buffet is into the 4th day of his visit to India and finally we have something amusing from the Oracle: he wants to be reborn as Sophia Lawrence’s boyfriend!

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Buffet spoke about inflation and investment opportunities, though his take on rebirth and his family was the point that stood out the most. Excerpts from the interview:

A: We are looking to make big investments anywhere in the world, if we can find really good businesses run by people we admire and trust and where we understand the business. Certainly, India is in the top four-five countries in the world that have the sort of business that we are looking for. So, I have been dropping my phone number around as I have covered the city and I hope that it rings on Monday morning with good news.

Q: The best case scenario for inflation in India next year is projected between 5% and 6%. We are going end this fiscal, that’s March 31, 2011 at about 8%. I know you have often said that inflation dwindles the equity investor and it is perhaps the best alternative amongst other alternatives as a hedge against inflation. But given the fact that we are dealing with fairly high levels of inflation in India, what would your advice be to people who are investing what should they change, what should they do?

A: Inflation, someone said many years ago that it is an invisible tax that only one man in a million really understands. It is a tax on people that have had faith in their currency, the governments issued it. The best investment against inflation is to improve your own earning power, your own talent. Very few people maximize their talent. If you increase your talent, they can’t tax it or they can’t take it away from you. So, if you become more useful in your activities, your profession, doctor or whatever may be, that is the best protection.

Q: Since we are talking about money, I want to talk to you about your decision to give yours away. That makes you a selfless man to the world, it makes you the ambassador of philanthropy. But what about your family, does your family sees you as a selfless man as well? How did you get them to buy into your decision, to give away 99% of your wealth?

A: They haven’t talked to me for quite a while. My family is going to be in the upper quarter of 1% or something like that of humanity in terms of the funds that they have at their disposal. My goal originally was to leave my children enough so that they could do anything, but not enough so that they could do nothing.

Q: You are in India. This is the land of Karma and spirituality, do you believe in god, in a higher being, in a higher consciousness? This is also the land that believes in the concept and idea of rebirth. If you were to be reborn, what would you like to be reborn as? If you could do anything differently then what would it be?

A: Probably I could be reborn as Sophia Lawrence’s boyfriend.

BREAKING: Manchester United Veteran Gary Neville announces retirement with immediate effect

Veteran English right back, Gary Neville has announced his retirement from professional football with immediate effect. He will retire from football after 20 years playing at Manchester United.

Gary signed for United in July 1991 and was part of the famous Class of ’92 that won the FA Youth Cup in 1992. He then became a first-team regular alongside his teammates from that side, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, his brother Philip and David Beckham.

In his time at Old Trafford, Gary has played 602 games, scoring seven goals.  He has won the Champions League, eight Premier League trophies, three FA Cups, two League Cups, the Intercontinental Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.  He became United club captain in 2005.

Gary won 85 caps for England between 1995 and 2007, playing in two World Cups (1998 and 2006) and three European Championships (1996, 2000 and 2004).

Neville, who turns 36 this month, made the decision after much consideration. He said:

“I have been a Manchester United fan all my life and fulfilled every dream I’ve ever had. Obviously I am disappointed that my playing days are at an end, however it comes to us all, and it’s knowing when that time is and for me that time is now. I have played in the most incredible football teams, playing with some of the best players in the world as well as against them and I have been lucky to have been part of the team’s achievements and the club’s great success.

“There are so many people I want to thank and, of course, top of that list is Sir Alex. He has given me so many opportunities and countless support over the last 20 years – he is truly one of the greatest managers – and I have to thank him for that.

“There have also been so many great players that I have had the privilege to train and play alongside. The experiences we’ve shared will be with me for the rest of my life. Also, I’d like to thank all the coaches I have played under from youth level right through to now, who have guided me through my playing days. And finally, the fans, who have always shown me unbelievable support. They know how special they are to me and this club.

“I am looking forward to new experiences and the club will always be a part of my life going forward. However, the most important thing now is for the club to continue with the success that is synonymous with Manchester United and I will be supporting them all the way, as a fan.”

Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson said:

“Gary was the best English right back of his generation.  He is an example to any young professional; hard-working, loyal and intelligent. As a United fan born and bred, his fantastic career at Old Trafford has cemented his place in the affection of the club’s supporters everywhere.

“His impact on the club in general has been huge; his presence in the dressing room and leadership qualities have been an asset to me as a manager. All the young players who have sought his advice on many matters, particularly on contract issues owe him a great debt.

“As a young boy he had the will and determination to succeed as a footballer and that character remained with him throughout his career. That’s the legacy he leaves every young player at Manchester United.”

Reds chief executive David Gill said:

“Gary has been a great servant to the club and we thank him for his loyalty and his contribution to the tremendous success we have enjoyed in his playing time here. I know from my many dealings with him over the years that he’s always had the club’s best interests at heart. So, while this illustrious chapter in his career has finished, his experience, commitment and energy will ensure he will continue to play a part in the life of the club, whether on the coaching or the commercial side.”

Our best wishes are with Gary – a true servant of Manchester United!
