OFFICIAL: Lumia 800 — The ‘first real Windows Phone’ (video)

The curtains are up and we finally have our first real Nokia Windows Phone device named Lumia 800, unveiled at Nokia World few hours ago. A Nokia N9 look-alike, the 800 is a pretty impressive device powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU and is sculpted from the same 12.1mm (0.48-inch) thick piece of durable polycarbonate plastic, with tapered edges on the top and bottom to give it that industrial look and make it feel thinner than it really is. Towards the center it sports a curved ClearBlack AMOLED (800 x 480) display, with a Carl Zeiss optics-enhanced lens around the back.

On the inside it comes loaded with 16GB of internal storage, 512MB of RAM and 25GB of free SkyDrive space, and features Nokia Drive, Nokia Music and ESPN Sports Hub — all built into the OS. As for the OS itself, well, its the magical Windows Phone Mango, as you’d have already expected.

Other features include an 8MP camera with f/2.2 aperture, designed specifically for low-light environments, and quad-band GSM support, with HSDPA download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps.

Priced at €420 ($585), the Lumia 800 is already available for pre-order in the U.S. and will roll out across France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK beginning next month, and will make its way to Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan before the end of the year, with “further markets” on the horizon for a launch sometime next year.

Introduces a range of stylish, smart mobile phones, superior Nokia Maps, partnership for co-branded accessories with Monster, and more

London, UK – At Nokia World, the company’s annual event for customers, partners and developers, Nokia demonstrated clear progress on its strategy by unveiling a bold portfolio of innovative phones, services and accessories, including the first smartphones in its Windows Phone-based Nokia Lumia range. The stunningly social Nokia Lumia 800 brings content to life with head-turning design, Nokia’s best social and Internet experience, familiar Nokia elements, such as leading imaging capabilities and new signature experiences. The colorful and affordable Nokia Lumia 710 is a no-nonsense smartphone that brings the Lumia experience to more people around the world.

Nokia also launched four new mobile phones which feature stylish design, a rich social experience and location-aware technology. “Eight months ago, we shared our new strategy and today we are demonstrating clear progress of this strategy in action. I’m incredibly proud of these new devices – and the people of Nokia who have made this happen.”

It is scheduled to be available in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan before the end of the year, and in further markets in early 2012.

Nokia also announced its plans to introduce a portfolio of products into the US in early 2012 and into mainland China in the first half of 2012. In addition to the existing products, which include coverage for WCDMA and HSPA, Nokia also plans LTE and CDMA products to address specific local market requirements.

Carrier wars: iPhone 4S pre-orders begin today

For those of you who were caught up by a gloomy Thursday, here’s a reminder that the new iPhone 4S is available to be booked from today, 3:01am ET onwards. And for the first time, people in the U.S will have up to 3 carriers to choose from to get an iPhone — AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.

Carrier Wars

There are a number of factors that influence which carrier to go for but the number one factor has to be good call network and services provided by the carrier. Take note:

  • Sprint offers an unlimited Data Plan (Through October).
  • AT&T’s GSM network will allow faster 14.4 Mbps (theoretical) data speeds and talk and simultaneous data and more international roaming options.
  • Verizon and AT&T have free hotspots on their 4GB and up plans while Sprint’s is $30/month.

If that isn’t enough, this chart from PCMag will surely help you choose the best available option.

Its here: iPhone 4S

After months of speculation and high drama, Apple has finally given us the toy we were all waiting for – a new iPhone. Though there was no iPhone 5 in today’s event, the iPhone 4S is no pushover either, coming equipped with the new dual-core A5 processor, dual CDMA / GSM capability, and, of course, awash in Siri-enabled intelligent voice control. You can snag this black or white update on October 14th in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB configurations for $199, $299 and $399, respectively. Pre-orders start October 7. Tada!

BREAKING: Apple iPhone 4 available for pre-order in India from Rs.34,200 onwards

After launching the iPad 2 and slashing the iMac and Mac Mini prices in India recently, the country has now received some more affection from Apple in the form of the iPhone 4. The controversial smartphone is all set to arrive within the next 2-3 weeks, if online shopping site HomeShop18 is to be believed. Apparently, they are taking pre-orders for both Black and White variations of the iPhone 4 in the 16-gig and 32-gig models.

Price and availability

The 16GB model is put up for Rs.34,200 and the 32GB model for Rs.40,200 with Rs.40 an additional burden as shipping charges. The phone will be shipped to the buyer within 20 days of transaction and will come with a choice of either Airtel or Aircel as carriers.

While this is a clear indicator that the iPhone 4 is coming to India within the next 2-3 weeks, i’d suggest you don’t rush in quickly and pre-order one from the above mentioned site but instead wait and see what prices Airtel and Aircel have to offer you.

Apple updates Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2, includes minor changes

For those with the second preview of OS X Lion installed, there is an update available for you. Apple has just released a software update for Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2 which brings in a few minor graphical changes, and of course, a hint on the next preview’s arrival (OS X Lion Preview 3).

From systems that have developer preview 2 of Lion or Lion Server installed, run Software Update and download Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2 Update. You must also download Xcode 4.1 Developer Preview 3 available from the Mac Dev Center to build apps with this version of Lion.

The minor graphical changes we mentioned above are noticeable with iCal. Take a look.

White iPhone 4: Its almost there…

I know it is hard to believe but the White iPhone 4 is finally arriving in town, and will be available on both AT&T and Verizon.

The beleaguered smartphone, which was first announced in the summer of 2010 along with the black model has undergone numerous troubles, forcing Apple to delay its launch several times. But now, good times are here it seems.

If you remember, in October last year, Apple was quoted as saying that the white iPhone 4 was actually “more challenging to manufacture” than previously expected. They then said that it would be available in spring 2011. It is now finally arriving this month end.
