How much money is needed to create a good app?

If you’re considering making an app for your organization, it’s wise to determine early on how much the project will cost. Because the complexity involved in developing apps varies widely from project to project, the costs involved fluctuate widely as well.

Unfortunately, that means there is no single answer to a question like, “how much do mobile app development cost?” But by working through the considerations listed below, you can reach a clearer understanding of how expensive your project might be.

Who Is Developing the App?

The first question to consider—and the one that will determine much about your approach to the project—is who exactly will develop the app?

They are essentially two options here. In the first case, someone already working for you company could develop the app. (That person might even be you!) In this case, the total cost of the app development work is no higher than that person’s salary. If you have an experienced and capable developer on staff, and they have the time to take on a significant new project, then you might make your app without any new budget outlays.

On the other hand, you could hire a freelancer or dev shop to handle your project. This can be an expensive proposition; high quality developers often bill more than $100 per hour. That’s $4000 for a full 40-hour work week. But, given the value that many mobile apps deliver, this can certainly be money well spent.

How Complex Is the Project?

If you are outsourcing the work to a development company like OTS Solutions, how much you pay them will depend largely on the complexity of the project.

Many times, the mobile apps that clients ask for are relatively simple. If you don’t need much graphic design, and your app doesn’t include lots of interactivity, it might only take a few weeks to make.

On the other hand, apps that require lots of design work, and include many interactive elements (like games, forms, purchases, etc.) can require hundreds of hours of work. And on top of design and development, complex projects also require more project management and QA work.

It’s very common for complex apps to cost tens of thousands of dollars. But again, if you are developing apps that have high value for your organization, that price could be a fantastic investment.

Controlling Costs

No matter the size of your budget, you’ll want to do everything possible to minimize the final cost. And there are a number of effective approaches to limiting the cost of software development, without sacrificing features or quality. Below are some of the most important ones to consider.

DIY Project Management

Even if your organization doesn’t have developers in house, it’s likely that you do have employees with project management expertise. Leveraging their time can be an effective way of limiting the price you pay outside freelancers. Tight project management will keep the work on pace, and reduce the time developers have to waste figuring out exactly what is expected of them.

Create a Clear Project Plan

On a similar note, creating a definitive, comprehensive project plan before hiring freelancers will not only save you headaches and heartbreak, it can also save you thousands of dollars.

For those without experience making applications, it’s normal to assume that most of the work consists of actual coding time. But in fact, things like requirements analysis and drafting design specs can be equally challenging, and eat up a huge portion of your budget. If you do your homework first and keep that work in house, you can easily save 25% or more on your outsourcing costs.

Limit Feedback and Revisions

Once you start to receive design mocks and prototypes, you will undoubtedly have ideas on how they could improve, and your project plan should account for revision time. However, you should be mindful revisions to a features (particularly once coding has started) can double or triple the time involved, and multiply your costs accordingly.

So when offering feedback, be sure to ask yourself how important your requests really are. If they are “nice to have” but not essential, consider holding your tongue and saving yourself some serious money.

Take an Iterative Approach

Lastly, many clients begin software projects with bloated lists of requirements that include numerous features their users don’t really need. This is a recipe for frustration, and perhaps more importantly, a surefire way to waste money.

Rather than attempting to build you dream application right out of the gates, consider aiming for an MVP—minimum viable product—instead. Ask yourself which one or two features are absolutely critical for the initial success of your project, and see if you can scale back your plans to just those items.

If you do decide to build an MVP, it can be especially helpful to work with a dev shop like OTS Solutions. Experienced developers have a sharp eye for “scope creep,” and their input will help you determine which features you really need, and which can wait until after your app becomes a hit.

The Bottom Line

As is often the case, you get what you pay for when it comes to mobile app development, and quality isn’t cheap. Whether you pay hourly or flat price your project, you should expect an effective hourly rate of $100, if not more. If that seems steep at first, don’t worry. There are many ways to control your total costs, and a well-made app will pay for itself over time.

4 Ways that Technology Improves Personal Finance Abilities

Although creating a personal budget can assist in maintaining personal finances, technology offers additional methods that are automated. Due to advancements in programming and device development, it is easier to manage your money now than it was in the 1900s. Everything from stock portfolios to Christmas savings accounts can be easily managed whether you’re sitting a computer or you’re using the smartphone. How has technology changed the way we view finances in the 21st century?

Mobile Budget Apps

Mobile technology provides a great deal of versatility for a wide range of situations. Budget apps are quite common for smartphones and tablets allowing you to control every aspect of your financial future regardless of where you are. These apps vary in use from secured online storage of information to device-based databases that can work without an Internet connection. However, those that operate online can usually integrate information allowing you to use desktop and laptop computers as well. Any purchase you make or money you deposit into the bank can be tracked in real-time from your phone as you’re standing at the counter.

Security of Devices

As fraudulent activities are a constant worry among users, developers integrate strong security measures in order to protect your information. Enhanced encryption methods provide a layer of protection to make sure your personal information isn’t obtained by the criminal element. According to the information found here, even ATMs offer SSL encryption when connecting to networks through TCP/IP in order to shield the data.

Investment Portfolio Management

In the days of old, those that wanted to invest money in stocks or bonds had to directly contact a representative. Thanks to the technology of today, these transactions can be done extremely quick from the comfort of your own desk. Various investing websites will not only allow you to easily purchase the stocks and bonds you want, but many of them act as a bank as well including debit cards and checks. From a single location, you can manage your investment portfolio and finances without phone calls or visits to the broker’s office.

Mobile Payment Processing

Instead of requiring cash to pay personal bills or send money to friends and family, there are many different mobile payment processing apps that you can choose from. Many of these apps double as a way to pay many of your bills online as well. With excellent record keeping capabilities and detailed reports, you can track every penny that you send or receive through these programs. According to NerdWallet featured on, “Nearly all banks now offer simple and secure applications that streamline your ability to pay for bills, deposit checks and conduct a variety of other financial transactions.”

These are merely a few ways in which technology has made personal finance easier to manage. Whether you’re saving money through the use of automatic debits to savings accounts or you’re operating a small home-based business, financial applications and organizations offer methods to maximize the use of technology. Instead of spending hours at a desk with a ledger and a pencil, real-time tracking and digital reports can offer a broader collection of information including showing you how much money you spend on fast food throughout the week. Embrace the convenience technology offers and spend more time enjoying the finer things in life.

3 Ways Mobile Readiness is Changing the Home Buying Game

Just a few years ago, buying a home sight unseen would have sounded absurd and something only wealthy international jet setters might consider since a few hundred thousand dollars is chump change to them. That’s no longer the case. In fact, many average home shoppers are feeling confident buying property without ever physically stepping inside it. Thanks to technology and mobile readiness, the entire home buying experience has undergone a makeover (and it’s looking good).

Consider this: Millennials are flocking to Colorado Springs, but not all of them have the option to move there temporarily and look for housing. Instead, they’re relying on their smartphones, drones (for those aerial photographs) and virtual tours from distant real estate agents. In 2014, mobile readiness came into being, and it’s revolutionizing a number of industries starting with real estate.

Here’s how:

1. Virtual tours are nearly as good as the real thing

Many real estate agents and home sellers are offering first person perspective virtual tours that you can check out on your smartphone. There’s no risk of tricky photography making rooms look bigger than they are or of Photoshop making it look like you’re buying a mansion for the price of a sublet room. There’s not much that can be done to trick you in videos, making them more trustworthy.

2. Drones send aerial shots right to your phone

In the era of affordable drones, the biggest non-military buyers are actually in the real estate market. There was a time when agents had to hire helicopters and special photographers to capture aerial photos, but now it can all be done with drones (which can easily cost under $500). If you want to check out the bird’s eye view, your agent can send up a drone and have images sent to you in under 30 minutes.

3. Google Maps (and the like) offer a different perspective

Don’t want to rely solely on the seller to tell you about what parks are nearby or what type of shops are in walking distance? Mapping technology such as Google Maps lets you check out street views and instantly search for your most-used establishments (from grocery stores to athletic shops) so you can get a feel for your future neighborhood. It’s quicker than driving around the area yourself and you can do it from the comfort of your couch.

Who said home buying has to be stressful and inconvenient? With mobile readiness, your dream home is at your fingertips.

3. Check into refurbished phones

If you need to make your online purchase as cost-effective as possible, this is definitely an option to consider. With websites such as, you can get access to a wide variety of refurbished phones at reasonable prices.

Once you’ve compared and contrasted the prices at several online stores, you’ll be able to make an informed decision with respect to which would be most appropriate for you.

4. Look up the firm with the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

When you’re trying to decide whether an online phone company is reputable, it’s a good idea to look it up with the BBB. In the era of the Internet, much information can be gleaned about a company’s credibility if you examine its rating and/or accreditation with the BBB.

Because that organization places value on empowering consumers with information with regard to the quality of services and products that businesses provide, the BBB can be an ally when you’re ready to buy a phone online.

If you’re interested in purchasing a high-quality phone from an online retailer, you probably want to know how to conserve resources. To ensure that you make an informed decision, observe the four tips outlined above.

4 Benefits of Owning a Website that is Optimized for Mobile Use

If your company webpage isn’t optimized for mobile screens, then you could be missing out on a significant amount of web traffic and conversions. It’s no secret that consumers are turning to their smartphones and tablets increasingly to make purchases and order services. Your audiences could be missing out on your important resources and products if your website isn’t mobile-friendly Take a look at these four main benefits to having a mobile website.

Nielson published the results of a mobile shopping survey in August 2013, and the results reveal some interesting consumer habits. The data reveals that 72% of smartphone shoppers and 80% of tablet shoppers make their purchases while at home. Consumers don’t have to deal with the hassle of driving to a shopping mall and interrupting their day to visit brick and mortar stores. The extreme convenience of ordering online has lead to the immense popularity of services like Amazon Prime. If you want to tap into a mobile consumer base, then your website must be easy to access from smartphones and tablets.

Content Clarity

Content that is not optimized for mobile devices might fail to load or lose its formatting on smartphones and tablets. This could be disastrous for companies that rely on their web presence for publicity, sales, and customer relations. For example, if your product listings are presented with Flash-based content, then many mobile users will be unable to load your website. Your company’s content should be easy to view from any computer or mobile device.

Touch Navigation

Websites with mobile optimization are easier to navigate. Image galleries respond to users’ touch and swipe gestures, so that they don’t have to search for a tiny “Next” button to see new pictures. Menu items on mobile websites are often large and easy to read, so that users can quickly tap through page directories.

Customer Satisfaction

A well-crafted mobile website can significantly improve your customers’ experiences. Shoppers could potentially turn away from your online storefront if the page is too unwieldy for their mobile devices. Mobile sites that are easy to access, navigate, and read are likely to increase your overall conversion rates.

Facebook’s Latest Mobile App Update

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Facebook is staying on top of mobile readiness, especially since more Americans are using mobile devices to stay connected than desktop devices in 2014. The company recently announced that mobile app ads will include Facebook page links as well as sharing other features as of August 6, 2014.

It basically aligns the ads with how they’ll appear on Facebook’s desktop display, including comments, and share and link features.

You’ll find a link to the Facebook page of the advertiser along with those of your friends who have already “liked.” If you don’t use Facebook’s mobile app now, you might be surprised to learn that none of these features currently exists in the mobile version.

When the company was first building the app, Facebook (like everyone else) was probably not aware of just how swiftly mobile use would overtake desktop. Now that it’s happened, everyone’s having to play catch-up.

Changes for advertisers

Businesses that advertise on Facebook will be forced to create content for their ads starting on July 2, 2014. If you’re a small business or startup who’s considering going on Facebook, forget about what you think you know with regard to campaign management.

Old formats are going to be switched immediately to the new one starting on August 6, although you can get a head start in July. It’s worth your time to check out the new requirements and get acquainted with the new design.

What does this mean for businesses who are scrambling to keep up with best practices of digital marketing? Targeting mobile users, not just users, is no longer optional but a requirement in order to stay competitive.

With Facebook, you’ll be able to generate more buzz by piggybacking ad efforts onto your Facebook page. It taps into the viral capabilities of the online social context, from sharing to more information that can help you reach more consumers.

Mobile and Facebook

Facebook was really designed for a mobile world, and already mobile users make up 59 percent of the social media giant’s revenue. That’s a hike of 30 percent since 2013, and there’s no sign that it’s going to slow down.

According to Facebook’s official statements, mobile revenue has raised ad income by 72 percent in the past year.

Now Facebook boasts a total of $2.5 billion in ad revenue alone, just from just the first quarter of 2014. There’s plenty of incentive for Facebook to streamline and improve its mobile ad campaign format, which means both consumers and businesses will be strong-armed along for the ride.

Making Life Easier and Safer With Handheld Devices

As we grow older, the mind and body age together, and require constant exercise and regular medical checkups to remain healthy. A full life depends on safe and independent tools in seniors’ lives, which may include a Rollator.

Handheld devices are making huge advances in society, changing how people communicate and move through the world. From tablets to smartphones, seniors are learning to incorporate technology into their everyday lives to enhance mental and physical health.

Connecting with family and friends

As children and grandchildren build their own lives, seniors may feel isolated from their family. Whether they are still at home or living in a facility, loneliness affects both the mind and body.

Mobile technology enables older citizens to connect through social media apps. From Facebook to Instagram, seniors can keep up with their entire family through status updates, posts, and pictures.

These connections can help elders feel they’re part of the big picture again, and enhance their life between physical visits.

Mental stimulation

With thousands of apps to choose from, seniors have the opportunity to stimulate their minds through entertainment, learning, and interaction. They can relax with a fun video game app or learn a new language, for example.

There are news apps for almost any national and local information source, which gives seniors a window on the world that’s not necessarily available on television. Keeping the mind exercised boosts overall health and keeps a person alert.

Health monitoring

One of the biggest innovations for mobile technology is integrated health monitoring. Specialized software can keep tabs on a person’s blood sugar or blood pressure, for example.

Today’s computing power can send that information to caregivers remotely in graph form so they can see how the person is faring across time. Seniors’ quality of life improves when their body responds well to medications and that’s reflected in consistent and verifiable tests.

Personal safety

Seniors used to have buttons to push when they were in need of emergency assistance, but this strategy wasn’t always effective. Today’s small handheld devices can be kept with the person at all times.

Family and emergency personnel can use the GPS embedded in the hardware to locate a lost loved one, if necessary. Medical personnel can also be notified of an emergency event with the handheld device as well.

Household safety

With mobile technology, there’s no need to worry about a loved one leaving the stove on anymore. Seniors control appliances, from the oven to the air conditioning, with their device.

If they forgot to turn off the stove, they don’t have to get up and physically turn a dial; the device performs the action for them. Along with safer household appliance use, there’s little threat from falling and not being discovered.

With senior lifespans easily reaching the 80s and 90s these days, people have more opportunities to benefit from mobile technology, whether communicating with grandchildren or notifying emergency personnel.

Consider getting a handheld device for a loved one to keep him or her stimulated and excited about the evolving world.

The Effect of the Electronics Boom on child-child and child-adult relationships

The Electronic invasion of family life

A generation ago Mums and caregivers were making home-made play-dough, cupcakes and Christmas decorations with their offspring and charges. Dads were building airplane and ship models and teaching their kids how to fish. There was one-on-one engagement with the child and this went by the old-fashioned name of bonding. This meant that the parent was the link between the child and a bewildering world. Parent was the fixed point of reference, the one who guided the child in matters of ethical, moral, and socially acceptable norms.

The electronic media consumed this and replaced it with a ready-made one-size-fits-all frame of reference. It threatens to gobble up the old-fashioned notion of quality time.

And let us not place the blame entirely with the kids. What does Dad do when he gets home? Talk to the family about their day? Or grab a can of beer from the fridge and channel-surf on the telly? Is Mum cooking up some of the family’s favorite dishes or is it microwave dinners on a tray?

Television 24/7, smartphones, social networking sites, online games and video games have changed the way members of a family interact with one another. There needs to be time engaged with family members to remain in touch with one another and to bounce off concerns, anxieties, successes and fears. Not to mention building confidence and affirmation, things which are essential to creating well-balanced happy individuals, child or adult.

Social Networking and Electronic Entertainment

Before the electronic media explosion kids experienced the world through contact with real people in real time in a real world. Parents arranged play-dates, families went on picnics or did a barbeque with other families. People entertained each other. The world was finite, and its boundaries were guarded by adults who cared. Whoever would have dreamed that one would talk about such a thing as E-safety or the issue of child-safe websites? What are these and what do they mean?

Unfortunately it means that the plethora of options provided by the electronic media leave the doors open to abuse. Predators, cyber-bullies, scams, all make of this wonderful technology a minefield of hazards to inexperienced children. Forums such as the excellent and informative, and the entertaining and informative site Child Focus, as well as Commom Sense Media, are addressing this issue which needs to be taken on board by parents, teachers and care-givers.

Children need to engage with real people in order to learn the give-and-take of relationship-building skills, not to mention acquiring social graces, the art of conversation, and the exchange of experiences and ideas. It is a dynamic form of personal growth and essential for a well-grounded personality.

The revolution in the manner in which the young entertain themselves has had the spin-off for parents in that they no longer have to plan or give time to keeping the young occupied and entertained. The price it has exacted has been high. Many children are spending as much as 7 hours a day on electronic pursuits. Social networking has become an obsession with the 10-18 age-group. A circle of friends will sit around the playground texting each other. In the cinema the click-click of mobile phone messaging is part of the white noise in the background.

The electronic revolution has been a great leveler in those countries of the world in which it almost regarded almost as a basic human right. Access to knowledge and to information is available in all in the most democratic of all spheres of life.

But it has to be used wisely and with caution.
