Microsoft has officially given its upcoming Windows 8 operating system its own unique identity, dressed in simple and smart metro colors.

Windows 8 brings with it a host of exciting changes, including more tiles, faster boot times and complete scrapping of the familiar START button (orb for the more recent Vista and 7). "We wanted the new logo to be both modern and classic," said Microsoft’s Sam Moreau on the official Windows blog. The window is slanted somewhat, in keeping with the manner in which many of the Metro UI’s elements – such as live tiles – behave.

The logo is also designed to change color as per the theme being used, making it more naturally cool.

"When you change your color, the logo changes to reflect you."

You can soon see the logo effect and other such wonderful implementations by Microsoft in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview which is due on February 29th. The final release of Windows 8, on the other hand, still looks far from making a 2012 entry into the market. OS X Mountain Lion anyone?
