Werder Bremen have confirmed Mesut Ozil has joined Real Madrid for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around 15 million euros.

Bremen turned down an offer from the Spanish giants on Friday but have now reached an agreement which satisfies their demands for a player who would have otherwise been available for free when his contract expires 12 months later.

Mesut Ozil, one of the stars of the World Cup in South Africa, will undergo a medical in the Spanish capital tomorrow.

The 21-year-old did not take part in the Bundesliga club's final training session ahead of tomorrow's Champions League clash with Sampdoria this afternoon.

Madrid also confirmed the deal, and Bremen's director of sport Klaus Allofs said: "We are respecting the player's wishes to take the next step in his career immediately."

Allofs had opened up new contract talks with the Germany international a year ago, but the player officially rejected the club's final offer prior to the World Cup.

From that moment, it was clear Bremen would be forced to sell the 21-year-old, who only had a year left to run on the three-year deal he signed when he arrived from Schalke in 2008, otherwise they would have lost him on a free transfer next summer.

Words to that effect from Ozil's father, who told Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper today that his son will be moving to Real Madrid "in any case", may have spurred Bremen on to accept Real's improved offer.

That transfer has now gone through, however, with Ozil, who played 71 times for Bremen, scoring 12 goals, now set to play in the Champions League for Real.

Ozil was a key member of the Germany squad which finished third at the World Cup in South Africa and his performances there will have convinced Real coach Jose Mourinho to make him his second signing from the Germany national team this summer after spending 14 million euros for Sami Khedira from Stuttgart.

Ozil: Mourinho is why I joined Real

Mesut Ozil revealed that the main factor behind his move to Real Madrid was coach Jose Mourinho.

The Spanish giants announced the signing of the highly rated midfielder from Werder Bremen on Tuesday afternoon after finally convincing the Bundesliga club to let their star go for around 15 million euros.

Ozil had been hotly chased by top clubs such as Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United after rising to fame in the World Cup.

But it was Real Madrid who had the last laugh after finally securing his signature.

The 21-year-old is already looking forward his new career at the Bernabeu and thanked his former club for developing him into the player he is today.

"It is the next step in my career," the he told Germany Sky.

"I had wonderful years here [at Werder Bremen].

"The coach [Mourinho] wanted me. Real are a strong team but I need not be afraid."

Ozil will be officially unveiled as a Madrid player on Wednesday at the Bernabeu.

Ozil is really talented. The guy is the king of assists. I think Real Madrid have been missing a player who will play that killer pass for awhile now. I hope he does well at Real Madrid!

Well, frankly speaking, Real Madrid never had the problem of a play-maker. Before Ozil's arrival, they had (and still have) the quality services of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, not to mention the others. Ronaldo, okay might be selfish many a times. but Kaka? His passes can split any defense!

All said, Ozil is a quality player and will definitely boost Real Madrid's options going forward.

I'd LOVE to see them win the La Liga this year. Just hate Barca!!!

Well Kaka was injured so much last season. And although Ronaldo is a creative player, Pellegrini really restricted him to being more of a goalscorer, which really limited his play. So Ozil is a welcome addition.
