Real Madrid snap up Chelsea's Ricardo Carvalho

Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho will join Real Madrid after both teams agreed to the deal last night.

The Blues confirmed they have agreed terms for the sale of the Portugal international defender, while Madrid revealed Carvalho will join on a two-year deal.

A Chelsea statement read: "Chelsea Football Club can confirm it has agreed terms with Real Madrid for the transfer of Ricardo Carvalho.

"The transfer is subject to a medical and the player agreeing personal terms.

"Chelsea would like to thank Riccy for his six years of service, and we wish him well in his future career."

Carvalho joins up with former boss Jose Mourinho, with whom he worked so successfully at both Porto and Chelsea.

The 32-year-old centre-half heads to the Spanish capital - reportedly for a fee of around 8million euros - on the back of a hugely impressive World Cup showing in which Portugal conceded just one goal.

A Madrid statement read: "Real Madrid CF and FC Chelsea have reached an agreement for the transfer of Ricardo Carvalho.

"The player will be linked to Real Madrid CF the next two seasons."

This comes as a major blow for Chelsea, who have lost each of their last 4 games, including the 1-3 defeat at the hands of Manchester United in the Community Shield.

The Blues begin their title defense at home against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday 14th August, 2010.
