Mouseless: Your hand becomes your new Mouse!

Now how about that! The field of technology is growing so rapidly these days that you are left amused and excited at the same time. And this new piece of 'magic' by Pranav Mistry is just 'magical' to say the least.

Pranav Mistry, the Indian magician who loves to create new and unique ways to interact with computers, along with Patti Maes and Liyan Chang have invented Mouseless - a technology which enables you to substitute your mouse with well... your hand!

But How?

The logic used here is pretty simple. Using an infrared (IR) camera and an infrared (IR) laser beam (both of which must be embedded in the computer), the users' hand movements are tracked and interpreted by Mouseless (a specialized software). The laser illuminates parts of the hand that are touching the surface of the table, the camera tracks those illuminated parts, and the software sorts out what kind of commands are being sent - from simple movement to clicks to multi-touch gestures. In short, the user positions his hand and taps his fingers in much the same way that he would if a physical mouse were present.

Wow! Sounds Costly!

Mistry claims that a "fully functional working prototype of 'Mouseless' " cost them approx $20 to build which, according to me, is very feasible. And the way with which the technology is improving day by day, along with the sheer determination of Pranav to bring more gestures and mouse movements to Mouseless, the future really looks bright.
