Apple have finally unveiled the most controversial iPhone ever at the ongoing WWDC event, called iPhone 4. Yes, it's neither suffixed 4G or HD - and there's a reason for that: The stainless steel band that goes around the phone is an antenna system that's plugged into the same old GSM / UMTS radio that we all are familiar with. And after all those rumors we have had about the iPhone 4 since the last couple of months, we are glad that this has come to an end - an expected end when it comes to the look of the next iPhone which Steve Jobs compares to an old Leica camera!

Apart from the looks and design, there's also this front-facing camera (which we all were expecting), and a new high resolution display which Apple regards as a "Retina Display". It's rated at 326ppi, which Apple claims is beyond the human eye's limit of distinction.

Inside iPhone 4

It's powered with an IPS Display (famous from the iPad), and is the same 3.5inch screen. There's also this A4 processor that runs the iPad.

A new engine, and a 25% thinner chassis, still meant that Apple could increase the battery life with new figures expected to be rated at 7 hours of 3G talk, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video, and 40 hours of music. And yeah, the WiFi is 802.11n now.

Software

For starters, the iPhone OS 4 is now iOS4! On the software front, applications will automatically get high resolution text and buttons, and with "a little bit of work" developers can make their entire app compatible with the new resolution display.

Developers will also get access to a new gyroscope, giving devs "six axis" motion control between the gyroscope, accelerometer, and compass, with a new "Core Motion" API to deal with it all. And to those who are not interested in this, there's that new HD video with which you can fool around using the brand new $4.99 worth iMovie App.

Hence you can now record HD videos at 720p / 30fps.
